The source is precise that this new lineage is not yet literally 'monkeys': the Sanskrit is vaanaruupiNam, 'resembling monkeys', and the term vanara itself derives from vane carati iti vanaraH -- 'one who ranges the forest' -- naming them for their forest-roaming habit rather than classifying them zoologically as monkeys.
